Hochul leads potential Democratic challengers Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado and Rep. Ritchie Torres by more than 30 points, the poll–released Monday, March 10–showed.
Forty-six percent of Democrats prefer Hochul, compared to 11% for Delgado and 10% for Torres, according to pollsters.
However, despite her commanding lead in a primary, the governor’s overall approval numbers remain mixed: Forty percent hold a favorable view, compared to 50% with an unfavorable view, the poll found.
Hochul’s overall job approval sits at 46% approve to 48% disapprove, the poll found.
“Although Hochul’s favorability rating continues to remain in stubbornly negative territory, where it has been since February last year, her overall job approval rating is close to the breakeven mark,” Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said. “Two-thirds of Democrats approve of the job Hochul is doing as governor, however, 79% of Republicans and 59% of independents disapprove.”
Currently, 34% of voters say they would re-elect Hochul, while 56% want “someone else,” according to the poll. Among Democrats, they would re-elect Hochul by a margin of 51-40%.
The poll shows voters support Hochul’s efforts on several key issues:
✅ Protecting constitutional rights (positive approval)
✅ Ensuring access to quality, affordable healthcare (positive approval)
✅ Making New York safer (narrow plurality approval)
But on the major concern of affordability, the governor is underwater by 11 points, with a majority of voters disapproving of her handling of the issue.
“Strong majorities approve of Hochul’s work on constitutional rights and healthcare,” Greenberg said. “But when it comes to making New York more affordable, voters are clearly frustrated.”
